Anthony “Tony” Vergona, Jr, 70, of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 5, 1946 in Rome, New York, he was the son of the late Anthony R. Vergona and Mary Calandra. Once moving to the area, he was a lifelong resident, graduating in 1964 from Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Tony worked for Ward Products in Amsterdam before his retirement in 2003. He was also employed by Fultonville Machine and Tool, and enjoyed moonlighting as a short order cook for The Hungry Bear in Amsterdam. He was a member of the NRA, and loved to reminisce about his many hobbies; metal detecting, CB radio, fishing, “shooting pool” and bowling to name a few. Tony was also an avid and talented woodworker; making anything including clocks, frames, furniture and much more. He loved his motorcycle life; especially his custom Suzuki Intruder. Most importantly of all, Tony was a huge family man. Attending his children’s events was something he relished; but he found no greater pleasure than cooking Sunday dinners for his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather; he will be sadly missed by all. On October 5, 1974 Tony married his loving wife, Donna Dence, it was a union that lasted over 40 years. In addition to his wife, survivors include his loving family, son, Michael (Hali) Vergona; daughters Michelle Vergona (Elwood Bergman) and Marie Vergona (Tara Poulton); his granddaughter, Olivia Lutovsky. He is also survived by his dearest cousin Richard LaGreco of Orange Beach, AL. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. A memorial service for Tony will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 11am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with Rev. Cynthia Leonard presiding. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. Calling hours for Tony will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 5pm until 7pm at the funeral home.
