Mr. Robert E. Markert

Mr. Robert E. Markert, 91, of State Highway 30, Town of Perth, NY, died peacefully on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at his home he built surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 15, 1925 a son of the late Earl and Henrietta Juedes Markert. A lifelong area resident, Robert attended local schools and was a graduate of the former Perth Central School in 1942. He was drafted into the US Army in 1943. He took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and landed on Omaha Beach. He earned five bronze battle stars and served in Europe until his discharge in 1945. Robert took part in an honor flight to Washington DC. In 2010. He was employed for many years as a Computer Programmer for the former Mohasco Corp in Amsterdam. He was last employed before his retirement at the Sanford Home for Women in Amsterdam. Robert was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post #701 in Amsterdam and the Johnstown Moose Lodge. He was an avid NY Yankees fan and enjoyed spending time with his family. Following his retirement, he and his wife Shirley would travel to Florida, where they were part of the Floridana Home Association. Above all he loved his family dearly. He married Shirley Husted Markert on August 17, 1947. She passed away on July 13, 2015. Survivors include his children, Gary (Gail) Markert of Palatine Bridge, Gail Markert of Johnstown, Lori (Tom) Wolfe of Perth, Robert S. (Jennifer) Markert of Perth,; five grandchildren, John Markert, Elizabeth Ackerman, Marissa Burks, Briana Markert, and Ashley Markert; two great grandchildren, David and Ethan Ackerman; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Robert was predeceased by his brother, Donald Markert February 23, 1987 and his wife Marion Markert on February 28, 2015. He was also predeceased by his daughter-in-law Michelle Markert and her son Micheal Waffle. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2016 at 1:00PM at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. William T. Hodgetts, Jr. presiding. Calling hours will be held prior to the service beginning at 11a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will take place at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s memory to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to the Leatherstocking Honor Flight, PO Box 621, Cobleskill, NY 12043. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
