Marie Diehl

Marie M. Diehl, 93, formerly of West Main Street, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Monday afternoon November 17, 2014 at Wilkinson RHCF in Amsterdam. Born in Braintree, MA; on July 31, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John Duncan and Mabelle Christine Horte MacTaggart. Marie moved to Trenton, NJ; area as a child and lived in Trenton until adulthood. A brief marriage in the 40’s resulted in two children. Marie was a resident of Amsterdam for over 30 years. A veteran of World War II, she served in the Woman’s Army Corp from 1944 to 1945. Marie was a graduate of Asbury College, KY, University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers University. Marie did her doctoral study at the University of Pennsylvania. Marie taught at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, and made her career as a secondary school librarian in central New Jersey, Kingston, New York and Amsterdam, New York. Marie was active in many volunteer positions, including the National Fraternity of Secular Franciscan Order, John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701 in Amsterdam and the Stratton Veterans Administration Hospital Library in Albany. Marie is survived by her son, Alan Diehl of Amsterdam, NY, her daughter, Christine Connell and granddaughter, Dianne Connell, both of Albany, NY. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 8:30 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, New York, followed at 9:15 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon, Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 6 at the Riley Mortuary.

Mary S. Morini, 93, of Lindbergh Avenue, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Thursday afternoon November 20, 2014 at Wilkinson RHCF in Amsterdam. Born in Baltimore, MD on July 9, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Ellen Holland Sullivan. Mary received her education in the Baltimore school system and was a homemaker. Mary was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Mary was an active member and past president of St. Mary’s Institute PT. She was also a member of St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, Antlers Country Club and the Century Club. Mary is survived by her husband, Dr. Alfred J. Morini Sr., whom she married April 24, 1943, two daughters, Jacqueline Bresonis (Bill) of Amsterdam, NY; Jody Enten (Bob) of Baltimore, MD; two sons, Dr. Alfred J. Morini Jr. (Barbara) of Amsterdam and Thomas Morini (Martha) of Derry, NH; one brother, Thomas Sullivan of Baltimore, MD; twelve grandchildren, Katie McKee (John), Patrick Bresonis (Julie), John Bresonis (Martha) and Maggie Stoughton (Mark); Alex Enten (Menaka) and Caroline Enten; Dr. Chelsea Morini, Megan and Brian Morini; Hannah, Julia and Thomas Morini and four great grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan, Abigail and Emily. Nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:15 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY; followed at 11:00 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Helen McGuire Boswell, 93, of Amsterdam, NY; passed away Friday morning November 21, 2014 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam. Helen was born in Johnstown, NY; on February 2, 1921, the daughter of the late John and Louise McGuire. She was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School and the Amsterdam School of Commerce. She was employed by the NY Telephone Company until her marriage to Robert Boswell on August 11, 1942. Helen was a longtime resident of Minaville, NY; where she made many close friends, and became an active member of the community. She was a member of the Labora Club and the Town of Florida Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Robert Boswell in 1991, her two sisters, Kathryn Wilde and Jean Viele and brother, John M. McGuire. She is survived by her daughter, Linda DeWitt (Kenneth) of Edinburg, her son, Thomas (Tatiana) Amsterdam; six grandchildren, Amy DeAngelis, John DeWitt; Dr. Lori Langdon, Molly Doyle, Rebecca Black and Robert Boswell; Twelve great grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and dear friend, Debbie Johnson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY; followed at 11:00 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam. Relatives and friends may call Tuesday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 at the Riley Mortuary, prior to the services. The family would like to express their gratitude to all who lovingly cared for Helen during her years at the Sarah Jane Sanford Home. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nancy Knudsen, the nursing staff at St. Mary’s and Community Hospice for kind and dedicated care during these last two weeks. George M. “Nick” Platt Jr., 67, of 16061 SE. 134th Court, Weirsdale, FL; passed away November 10, 2014 at his home. Born in Amsterdam, NY on October 4, 1947, he was the son of George M. and Lois Sexton Platt. Nick received his education in the Amsterdam school system Nick was a proud and honorably discharged veteran, serving with the United States Navy Sea Bee’s from 1967 to 1971. Nick is survived by a son, George M. Platt III, his daughter, Kimberly Platt and his brother, Peter S. Platt. A memorial service will be held at a later date and time to be announced. Patricia Ann Bracchi, 80, of Division Street, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Monday morning November 24, 2014 at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam. Born in Amsterdam on November 2, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Florence Pearson Falcone. Patty was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was employed at the former Briers of Amsterdam and Wicked Walrus leather shops in Amsterdam. Patty was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam. She was also a member of TOPS. Her husband, Joseph A. Bracchi whom she married May 12, 1956 passed away January 31, 2010. Patty is survived by two daughters, Beverly Mosher (Tommy) of Amsterdam and Donna Bracchi (Jim) of Wilton, NY; two sons, Joseph Bracchi of Amsterdam and Michael Bracchi (Colleen) of Colorado Springs, CO; three brothers, George Falcone of Middleburgh, NY; Jamie Falcone of New Jersey and Peter Falcone of Florida and one sister, Mary Jean Buck of Canada, three grandchildren, Dena Mosher, Anthony (Emma) Bracchi and Samuel Bracchi, brothers and sisters in law and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday November 29, 2014 at 10:15 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010, followed at 11:00 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church 156 East Main, Amsterdam, NY. Born in Amsterdam on November 14, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Droughan McDermott. T; received his education at St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam. He was employed as a food salesman for McDermott Food Brokers in Albany, until his retirement. T; was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, proudly serving from 1943 to 1946. T; was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam and was also a member of its Holy name Society. T; is survived by his wife, June Fisher McDermott, whom he married February 7, 1948, one daughter, Kathleen Mary Kolodziej (Jerry) of Grapevine, TX; four sons, T. Kevin McDermott (Susan) of Amsterdam, Joseph F. McDermott (Adele) of Clifton Park, NY; Patrick M. McDermott (Anne) of Amsterdam and Robert C. McDermott (Debra) of Guilderland, NY; thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Carol McDermott Minch in 2001, his son, William B. McDermott in 2012, one sister, Mary Elizabeth McDermott and three brothers, Joseph, James and John McDermott. Theresa Ina Conti, 89, of Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Thursday morning December 4, 2014. Born in Australia on May 30, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Ina Harrison Carty. Theresa received her education in Australia and received her B.S. Degree from Empire College in Albany, NY. She was employed as Program Manager at Montgomery County Office For The Aging in Amsterdam. Theresa also was a very successful and well-respected realtor for several different real-estate companies . Theresa was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam. She is survived by two sons, Antone Conti (Helene) of Englewood, FL; and Terrence Conti of Amsterdam, NY; two daughters, Lisa Greco (Michael) and Marlana Conti all of Amsterdam, one brother, Frank Carty of Fort Meyers, FL; three grandchildren, Ciara, Ashley and Michael Greco, one great granddaughter, Penelope and several nieces and nephews in Australia. Theresa was also predeceased by a son Sean Conti and her sister, Charmaine Murphy. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Jerry received his education at St. Mary’s Institute and was a graduate of Bishop Scully High School, Class of 1980. Jerry was last employed as a taxi driver in Amsterdam. Born on August 22, 2009 in Schenectady, NY; he was the son of Jayson and Christine VanAlstyne White. Kenny was a kindergarten student at Berne-Knox Westerlo School. Kenneth my son, you will always be the most important part of my heart and memories. I’ll forever cherish the moments that I held you in my arms. You graced me from day one with your smile and your charm. Now you’re up in heaven with all the angels there above, so go and rest in peace my boy. I’ll send you all my love. You will forever be my angel. My sweet baby boy, you may be gone, but not forgotten and you will live in my heart forever more. Love always, Mommy. Barbara J. Baia, 87, of County Highway 155, Gloversville, NY; passed away Monday January 26, 2015 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY. Born in Little Falls, NY on June 23, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Argie and Marion Prentice Placidi. Barbara received her education and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Little Falls. She was employed as a dietician at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and also at Clara S. Bacon School, in Amsterdam. Barbara was a parishioner and communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and was also an avid bowler in the Fifth Ward League in Amsterdam. Her husband Alfred “Freddie” Baia to whom she married May 23, 1948, predeceased Barbara on January 16, 1990. Barbara is survived by her son, Joseph Baia (Janine) of Amsterdam, NY; two grandsons, Joseph and Bryan Baia and her sister, Rosalie Fallove (Sam) of Utica, NY. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Edward R. Furman, 91, of Truax Road, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Tuesday morning January 27, 2015 at Albany Medical Center. Born in Amsterdam on May 17, 1923, he was a son of the late Stanley and Katherine Furman. Ed received his education and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Ed was an honorably discharged United States Army Veteran and served in Normandy form 1943 to 1946. He was employed as an electrician at Fiber Glass Industries in Amsterdam until his retirement. Ed was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church. He was also a member of the John J. Wyszomirski American Legion Post 701, Amsterdam Elks Lodge 101, Polish American Veterans and a Charter Member of the Cranesville Volunteer Fire Department. Ed is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Steven (Mildred) John (Jane) and Robert Furman who’s wife, Elaine survives. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Monday at 9:15 at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Interment with military honors will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Calling hours are Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Riley Mortuary. Mae Post, 92, of Ridge Road, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Thursday morning February 5, 2015 at Wilkinson RHCF in Amsterdam. Born in the Town of Colonie on June 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Florence Wagoner James. Mae received her education in the Berne-Knox school system and was employed as a Motor Route Driver for the Leader Herald in Gloversville, until her retirement. Mae enjoyed NASCAR, Stockcar Racing at Fonda Speedway, baseball, knitting, crocheting, crafts and going to the casinos. Her husband, Charles L. Post, whom she married December 9, 1941, passed away June 11, 2003. Mae is survived by one son, Robert J. Post (Debera) of Guilderland, NY; and one daughter, Melissa Ross (James) of Amsterdam, her granddaughter, Megan Ross and her great grandson, Anthony Baldwin. Nieces and nephews also survive. Mae was predeceased by one brother, John James and two sisters, Alice Ostrander and Irene Barber. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place at Perth Cemetery in the spring. Memorial gifts in Mae’s name may be made to Montgomery County SPCA P.O. Box 484 Amsterdam, NY 12010.
