Mary Lou Smith, 75, of Amsterdam passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at St. Mary’s Hospital. Born on May 12, 1941 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Hanna Struensee. A lifelong resident of the area, Mary Lou graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Mary Lou worked as a secretary for the former Mohasco Industries for over 25 years. On October 25, 1969 Mary Lou married her loving husband, Philip Smith; together they recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. Mary Lou and her husband were avid stock car racing fans, often times they would go to races at the Fonda Speedway on Saturday nights, as well as traveling to racetracks in Albany and Saratoga. Many summers you could find Mary Lou and Phil boating and relaxing on the Great Sacandaga Lake together. In her spare time she loved to garden, spend time with her family and be with her Shih-Tzus, Tucker and Pogo. Mary Lou will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Besides her husband, Philip, survivors include her brother-in-law’s, William Smith (Barbara), Richard Smith (Kathleen), Thomas Smith and Michael Smith; sister-in-law’s, Diane Peck and Linda Luzinas, cousin, Martin Hanna; several nieces and nephews; dear friends, Bonnie Faulds, June Shelby and Sonya Snyder. Funeral services for Mary Lou will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 11:00am at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with Pastor Judy Humphrey presiding. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Sandflats, Fonda. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday prior to the funeral service from 10:00am until 11:00 am at the funeral home.
