John H. Gentile, 84, of Vrooman Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam. Born June 4, 1931 in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late Angelina and Anthony Gentile. He was a lifelong resident and attended the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. John was first employed at the Navy – Depot in Scotia. He then worked for the Army- Watervliet Arsenall for a number of years before becoming a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Amsterdam from 1969 until his retirement in 1986.He was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701, American Legion in Amsterdam. At one time he played softball for Post 701. He also enjoyed going to the Casino’s and he was a sports fan especially when it came to his NY Yankee’s. He was married to former Michelena Giaquinto who passed away on July 25, 2015. Survivors include his son, Michael Gentile of Amsterdam; a grandson, Joseph Gentile (Laura) of Dunwoody, GA; a brother James Gentile of Amsterdam and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Private funeral services were held at the convenience of the family at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY the Rev. Pasqual Iannotti presided. Burial followed at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY with Military Honors.
