SOPHIE M. RICCIO April 15, 1921-March 7, 2014 Sophie M. Riccio R.N. died on Friday March 7, 2014 at the Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility in Amsterdam, NY at the age of 92 with her family by her side. Born in Amsterdam, NY on April 15, 1921, Sophie was the sixth oldest of eight children born to Michael and Mary (Coluni) Riccio. She was educated in local Amsterdam Schools and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1939. In 1942, she received her nursing degree from Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing , Poughkeepsie, NY. Sophie was loved by all whose good fortune it was to call her their sister, aunt or friend. A woman of wisdom, as her name implies, Sophie possessed the unique ability to keenly discern where there was a need, offer valuable insight and provide a loving and lasting remedy. Whether it was nursing a sick patient back to health or encouraging her cherished family or friends , Sophie was one to be trusted. Upon graduation from nursing school, Sophie practiced her profession as a private duty nurse. In 1954 she was appointed Head Nurse of a newly established recovery room at Amsterdam City Hospital located on Guy Park Avenue. After the hospital was re-named Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and relocated to Rte.30, Sophie continued as Head Nurse of the recovery room until her retirement in 1986. Sophie maintained enduring friendships with her nurse colleagues, notably, Audrey, Alice, Gwen and Clara. Together these women along with Sophie’s sister Fil enjoyed traveling, winter vacations in Florida and attending summer theater productions. Theirs was a bond that withstood the test of time, distance and even death. As a sister, Sophie was an abiding and steadfast presence. As an aunt, she understood the essence of each and every one of her beloved nieces and nephews. Aunt Sophie was the beacon, the light left on to guide them always home. In addition to her parents, Sophie is also predeceased by her brothers: Peter Riccio, Salvatore Riccio, Alfred Riccio and Louis Riccio; her sister, Filomena Riccio and her sisters-in-law, Alberta, Louise, Susan and Evelyn. She is survived by her brothers: John P. Riccio of Charlottesville, VA. and Michael J. Riccio (wife Rosalie) of Amsterdam, NY and seventeen nieces and nephews. The family expresses its appreciation to the staffs of the Sarah Sanford Home for Women and Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility for their compassionate care. Calling hours will be held at the Riley Mortuary, 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY, on Monday, March 10 ween 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. On Tuesday, March 11, funeral services will be held at 8:15 A.M. at the Riley Mortuary, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 A.M. celebrated at St Stanislaus R.C. Church, Cornell St., Amsterdam, NY with Father O. Robert DeMartinis as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sophie Riccio may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
